Yasuni National Park in Ecuador was designated a UNESCO biosphere Reserve in 1989 and covers an area of almost 10,000 km2. The park is home to several indigenous tribes, some of which are uncontacted such as the Tagaeri and Taromenane people, and the park itself is located within the ancestral territory of the Huaorani indigenous people. Despite its importance as one of the most biologically rich places on earth, the park is being threatened by oil extraction, deforestation and illegal logging.
