Venice, Italy

It is the commonest and largest sea anemone in the Mediterranean. It bears several hundred tentacles arranged in six concentric rows and equipped with stinging cells that are used to prey on small fish and invertebrates. It lives on rocky or detrital bottoms, where it prefers the brightest areas to facilitate photosynthesis of the symbiotic algae present within its tentacles.
