The view is from the north west, with the hump of Clogwyn y Gareg below the summit and Mynydd Mawr to the left. By 18th-century standards, Wilson has remained quite truthful to the scene but he has steepened the mountain slopes in order to dramatise the composition. His changes of mind are clearly visible on the ridge to the right.

  • Artist biographical information: Wilson was a seminal figure in British landscape painting. He was the first native artist who convincingly bridged the gap between the academic landscape and the topographical view.
  • Additional artwork information: This painting is one of the masterpieces of an artist often regarded as the founder of the English landscape school. Wilson’s models were French classical landscapists, notably Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet. Wilson echoes their concern for the structure of the landscape, a sense of balance and order, and a feeling for a beautiful, all over light. With these precepts he has fused a marvellous sense of place, a concern for the particular in nature which became one of the mainsprings of the Romantic movement.
