In the mid-14th century an association – the Brotherhood of Blackheads – was formed in Tallinn and Riga and carried on until 1940. It brought together unmarried merchants, ship owners and foreigners that were active in Livonia (present-day Estonia and Latvia). They were also artwork collectors. The snuffbox historically is from their collection. It was made at the Piotr and Alexander Lukutin Factory in Russia in a black lacquer technique.
