This sofa illustrates the style developed under King Ferdinand VII, being an adaptation of the Empire style as he had been educated in the French aesthetic and decided to renovate the furniture in the Royal Palaces accordingly. / This piece, whose design derives from the gondola sofa style, may have been made in Majorcan or Catalan workshops, very outstanding at the time in the production of furniture in the Empire style. The most important decorative motifs are the lion’s feet and the fretted and curved backrest. The lion, traditionally associated with sovereign power, adorned the legs and arms of furniture for sitting and resting on, and this kind of decoration was owed to the Frenchman Georges Jacob. / The sofa pertains to a chair set that has an exceptional historical and documental value as it is linked to one of the most important noble houses of Spain, the House of Osuna, created on 5 October 1562 by King Felipe II.
