Soil and Subsoil

"Soil and Subsoil" exposes the catastrophic environmental consequences of agricultural practices such as un-terraced farming, where plowing and planting run parallel to natural water sources. The gnarled and fallen barbed wire helps to measure the extreme level of erosion impacting this scene's ravaged farmland. "Soil and Subsoil represents a composite of Vernon red-soil landscapes that Hogue encountered between Oklahoma City and Tulsa after taking over as the head of the University of Tulsa art department in 1945.
