Soldiers of the Papal Militia

Pellegrino Tibaldi1572

Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano

Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano
Milano, Italy

The panel depicts a group of soldiers belonging to the papal militia on the march, probably a detail from the Miraculous Ground Plans of Santa Maria Maggiore by Pope Liberius, an episode originally inserted in a 15th-century stained-glass window dedicated to the Madonna of the Snow, later lost. The surviving panel is currently on display in the Milan Duomo Museum. It is a work by Rinaldo di Fiandra (documented in Milan between 1571-1572) based on cartoons by Pellegrino Pellegrini known as Tibaldi (Puria di Valsolda, 1527 - Milan, 1596).
