SOUK EL SELAH
Souk el Selah, in the photograph, was an arms market dating back to the Middle Ages.
Ida Uhse describes what it was like being a tourist in Cairo:
“20th of Nov. Went with the Countess in the morning to the bazaars and walked through several streets where different kinds of craftsmen worked in their little open-air workshops, and where tradesmen also keep their shops. Here they say their prayers, work and joke with their neighbours, as well as drinking coffee. After breakfast we wandered the streets again.”
