South African Figurine

Large standing figure of a woman in wood with bead ornaments, including shell and coral [?] bead necklaces and textile or string loin tassles. Attached to the loin tassle is a metal disk stamped 'P 16729'; from South Africa, the original label reads 'The Masindi sister of the Chief Mphafu. re P.O. Sibaso Mphafuvu Lusotho ni'; possibly collected by the Lynn-born artist-explorer Thomas Baines.
