To support the welfare of their employees, many collieries provided lots of different activities for their employees to get involved with. These ranged from brass bands to fishing. Amateur sports of all kinds were very popular. Football was one of the most successful, with some players going on to turn professional. Collieries even had their own divisions, but many also played in local divisions.
This photograph shows the South Normanton Colliery Football Club the year they won the Derbyshire Divisional Cup at Chesterfield in 1922. It was possibly taken at their pitch in fields behind the Devonshire Arms in South Normanton. The successor team went on to be called the South Normanton Miners Welfare, but again changed their name to South Normanton Athletic Football Club in 1990.
