Penry Williams was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1802 but spent most of his life as an artist in Rome. He returned to Wales fairly regularly to paint or accept commissions and to visit friends. He is well known for his paintings of industrial landscapes that were based on scenes around the industrial valleys of Wales. Penry Williams died on 27th July 1885 but remains, until this day as one of Wales’ greatest painters.
