The monumental intermediate concourse at Southwark Underground station is mid-way between the Ticket hall and platform levels. The station was designed by MacCormac Jamieson Prichard. The subterranean space is illuminated by natural light, which lights the blue enamelled glass wall and gives the space a light airy feel. This contrasts with the solidity of the wall from which the escalators descend. The lines are broken only by the minimal signage and the C.C.T.V. cameras. Before it was finished, this space became the much-publicised ambassador of the Jubilee Line Extension, showing the public the 'heritage of the future'. Southwark station was an entirely new station served only by the Jubilee line and provides access to the Tate Modern, the Globe and the Oxo Tower.
