Adnan Çoker was born in Istanbul in 1927. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1944-51, and completed his post-graduate training at the academy under Zeki Kocamemi. In 1955 he passed the Ministry of Education's scholarship examination and went to Paris, where he worked at the studios first of Andre Lhote and later Henri Goetz. On his return to Turkey in 1960 he was appointed as an assistant in the Painting Department at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1964
Çoker received a scholarship from France and returned to Paris, where he spent a year studying engraving under William Stanley Hayter (1901-1988), and then painting under Goetz. A year later he attended Vedova's studio at the Salzburg Summer Academy. Between 1977-79 he served as director of Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture. He won first prizes at the Istanbul Art Festival Painting and Sculpture Exhibition in 1961 and at the 23rd State Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture in 1962, and won second prize at the Alexandria Biennale in 1976.
