Tim Shaw painted each of the 250 individual slats that make up the fence of a mental health unit in Ipswich in 250 unique hand mixed colours. Each slat becomes the personal pronoun ‘I’ and Tim invites patients and staff to write and draw their own words and images on top of his painting. The title of the piece is ‘Speakers Corner’ and it refers to an area in Hyde Park where open-air public speaking, debate and discussion are allowed and encouraged. As well as being a vibrant and colourful artwork for the outdoor area at Woodlands, the fence becomes a surface for thoughts, ideas and statements to be added to over time.
