Spears like this were typical of the Tuareg, a Berber people with a nomadic pastoral life-style that lives in the Sahara region between Algeria, Mali, and Niger. They were reserved to the highest-ranking warriors. They have also been found among populations that had contacts with the Tuareg. For instance, the Wodaabe of Northern Nigeria, a Fulbe people, used them in specific types of ceremonial dances.
