Here in this genre painting, the proud Yankee is presented as a provincial man with a loose coat and hunting gear. His rival, the man dressed in urban elegance, seems to be courting the young, genteel woman in the midst of her “fancywork.” The weighing of urban values versus village culture is expressed here, yet we are unaware of which side Mount chooses.
