The stream released from the spouts of these jugs allows one to drink from them without coming into contact with them. Unglazed botijos are mainly used in summer because small amounts of water pass through the clay and cool the contents by evaporating. This jug is from Salvatierra de los Barros, a well-known pottery centre in south-western Spain. Plastic vessels are used as substitutes for traditional clay botijos and also serve as children’s toys.
