Yang Xianrang was born in Mouping, Shandong Province in 1930. He graduated from the Department of Painting, Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1952. He was successively editor and creator of the People's Fine Arts Publishing House, research fellow of the research room of the Ministry of Culture, chairman and professor of the Department of Folk Art of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He was the vice-chairman of the Print Art Committee of the Chinese Artists Association and the executive vice-chairman of the Chinese Folk Art Society. Yang Xianrang's works always have a strong sense of homeland, which is the general feature of his generation. With his strong emotional brushwork, he displayed to the times the persistent life questioning of his generation.
