Spring

Wenceslaus Hollar1641

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Spring is frequently presented as a comely young maiden holding blossoms, or posing near a vase of flowers. In Hollar’s print the large, almost overblown, costly tulips predominate. The tulips in 17th-century floral still lifes are often already in full bloom. Evidently, enthusiasts at that time were intrigued by the blossoms’ fanciful forms.
