From the Artist: The pandemic affected my work in many ways. During the early days when the weather was dark and cold, I started to create quilts. I was unable to go shopping for new fabrics and it seemed a perfect time to dive into my collection of assorted remnants. I studied traditional quiltmakers and learned about the wonderful quilts of Gees bend. My own quilts were not formally planned. I did not use patterns. I combined elements through an intuitive approach and the haptic appeal of certain textiles. The process felt freeing to me and comforting. In “Spring in the time of Covid,” I blend old aprons with other textures. The bird symbolizes the emerging spring and the sound pervading the air. Some theorized that because there were no airplanes in the sky, the birds were singing louder.
