Educated in St. Petersburg and Munich, Stanisław Witkiewicz (1851-1915) promoted realism in his work as a critic and artist. The artist became ill with tuberculosis and in 1890 left Warsaw to take up permanent residence in the south of Poland, in Zakopane. He quickly fell under the spell of the scenery of the Tatra Mountains and of the culture and art of the local Highlanders of the Podhale region. He became a passionate advocate of the so-called “Zakopane style”, which was typical mainly for architecture and the applied arts. He created views of mountains at different times of the year and in different weather conditions.
