From October 1935 to April 1937, Xu Beihong went to Guangxi because of problems in his relationship with Jiang Biwei. In March 1937, Xu made Spring Rains on the Li River in Yangshuo. At a time of national and personal crisis, Yangshuo’s Li River was a source of inspiration for Xu Beihong’s work, and a place where he felt settled.
