Gold or silver powder or foil cut into small pieces is placed inside a bamboo cylinder. The cylinder is then shaken over the paper to sprinkle the gold or silver. Water is first brushed over the paper before dōsa (a type of glue) is applied over the paper. The gold or silver powder or foil pieces are then sprayed over the surface before the glue dries. Next, designs are drawn on the paper. This technique branched out from the decorative paper once used for sutras and emakimono (illustrated horizontal scrolls).
