'Squares' was inspired by the artworks of “De Stijl” artist Piet Mondriaan. Hans van Manen and constructivist Bonies used squares in two ways to limit and adjust the space. First of all, a 3 by 3 meter platform with a 30 centimeter height challenges the dancers to constantly be aware of and interact with an uneven floor. Secondly, a large square-shaped neon light hangs from the ceiling. It’s both the only light source and a moving set piece, lowering slowly during the ballet and creating a barrier around the dancers that limits their space. The setting results in a more horizontally oriented choreography.
