The Madonna with Child and St. Ambrose were carved for the
tabernacle of a city gate - in the past identified as Porta Comasina but today
instead as Porta Romana - by a collaborator of Giovanni di Balduccio from Pisa
(documented 1318 to 1349) who was active in Milan between 1334-1335 and 1349.
