The saint is portrayed with the saltire or x-shaped cross, a reminder of his death and characteristic attribute. The type of head and the form it is given are typical of the somewhat rough and rugged style of this Seville-born artist. The figure’s posture and the colours used are reminiscent of similar works by Herrera, although the folds in his cloak are not drawn in the usual style favoured by this painter. The canvas may have belonged to an apostolate that has not survived.
