St Francis and Brother Leo Meditating on Death

This is one of El Greco’s most widely known compositions. It shows St Francis kneeling down, face forward, meditating on his own death while holding the skull in his hands. Brother Leo, a privileged witness to the final episodes of his life, is also shown kneeling down with his hands together, in an attitude that was clearly meant to be imitated by the believer.
