Saint Jerome lived in the 4th century. He was one of the great intellectuals of the Church as well as being a hermit. Such aspects are reflected in this composition through 17th-century desktop items, the skull and cross, representing the direct reasons for his meditation and penance, the apocalyptic trumpet (one of the saint’s characteristic attributes) and the Cardinal’s hat.
