The iconography of Saint John the Evangelist is varied, either as part of the apostolic cycles or by the Virgin at the foot of the cross. It is also shown, sometimes forming group with the rest of the evangelists or with his homonym John the Baptist. When depicted alone usually related to his banishment in Patmos where he wrote the Book of Revelation as well as scenes from the poisoned cup.
