St. John, the youngest of the apostles and the Lord's favourite, is one of the most beautiful figures of this Apostolic series. He holds a golden chalice from which a snake emerges. According to the Golden Legend of Blessed Jacobus de Varagine, the Dominican Emperor wanted to kill him and ordered him to drink poisoned wine, but when he raised the cup to drink, the poison escaped in the form of a snake.
