The original work, painted by El Greco around 1592-95, is housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. El Greco depicted Louis IX (1214-1270), the paradigm of the Christian king, as a general from the Modern Age, in the style of court portraits of that time: a three-quarter-length figure, positioned in the foreground and wearing rich armour and a crimson robe.
