St Michael's Mount, Cornwall

Evidence suggests that St Michael's Mount has been occupied since the Bronze Age. In the late 11th century, it was granted to the monastery of Mont St Michel in Normandy and a church built in 1135-44. It was later fortified and became a centre for pilgrimage.
