This oil painting by Sir James Thornhill was completed in 1710. The Acts of Apostles say that Paul was enraged upon the many images of pagan gods in Athens, and when questioned by a group of philosophers on his position in the Areopagus, the ancient court site in Athens, St Paul preached and was soon heard by a growing crowd. Thornhill's painting shows St Paul being listened to intently whilst making engaging and dramatic movements.
