London, United Kingdom

A landscape painting near Blackfriars Bridge, from the south side of the river looking towards St Paul’s Cathedral.

The painting was attributed to Richard Westall RA, in a Christie's sale on March 31 1939 (catalogue No.59). A nephew of Richard Westall was a member of the Bank Staff from 1811 to 1851.

The painting had been damaged in a fire and when restored, the attribution was queried by the British Museum in March 1977, who suggested it may be the work of Samuel Scott or William Marlow.
