Further Information: Pair to DPG323, St. Mary Magdalene in Penitence. The cock (to the right, near a waterfall) refers to Peter's denials of Christ (Mark XV, 30, 60-72): according to a tradition, particularly strong in Flanders, the Apostle used to shed tears whenever the heard a cock crow. There is a preliminary drawing for this panel in the Courtauld Institute Galleries.
