Stabilizer is a work by the British artist Richard Burton (King’s Lynn, UK,-). Burton creates “Hopper-esque” retro-futuristic scenes, dominated by pinks, purples, greens, and pale blues, and inhabited by solitary figures who usually have their backs turned from the viewer. His imagery draws on synthetic environments and frequently represents aspirational lifestyles through motifs such as cars, elegant hairstyles, and large 1950s armchairs. The artist speaks of the constant search for comfort and the possibility of fully satisfying that need through the repeated use of upholstered seats and softened forms, while his buttoned furniture and square cushions are inevitably reminiscent of padded cells.
