In March 1933, Hitler named Nazi Party propaganda chief Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels (directional, front row center, with staff, 1933) to direct the new Propaganda Ministry. Several months later, Goebbels formed the Reich Chamber of Culture to ensure only politically reliable “Aryan” journalists, filmmakers, musicians, and other artists could pursue their fields; Jews were banned from membership in the Chamber’s ranks. A radical antisemite and committed Nazi, Goebbels exerted immense control over culture and the mass media to spread and direct the party’s messages that furthered Hitler’s political, racial, and territorial goals.
