Behind the frontlines the field labor companies were mainly engaged in maintaining roads, bridges and railways, and for the military supply service they performed lading and transportation duties. On the frontline, the tasks included construction of trenches, shelters, barriers, building tank traps, putting landmines and demining and snow clearance during the winter months.
