Underground railman Lloyd Manning and ticket collector Lucille Richmond pose beside the platform tile motif at Brixton Underground station in 1971. Artist Hans Unger's design was a visual pun based on the station's name: a ton of 'bricks'. The photo was taken at the official opening of the Brixton extension of the Victoria line by Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, on 23 July 1971. Both members of staff met the Princess. The Victoria line terminus at Brixton made the area an important south London interchange between Underground, buses and overground trains. It bought the tube to an area of south east London which had not previously been covered.
