The spear head and butt is first made by a blacksmith from scrap iron rod which is repeatedly heat and hammered then hit to shape and the point of the butt hafted in wood which is held while the socket is made. The socket is made by hammering it round a small mandrel. Spear blade midribs are made by hammering the blade along the edge of the upright iron anvil. Then the horn is rubbed on the spear blade. The spear is carried by men for protection.
