In the painting "Stair of the Mercato Vecchio Courtyard" Vittorio Avanzi depicts the monumental external staircase that leads to the large portal of the aristocratic floor from the large courtyard of Palazzo della Ragione. Symbol of the institutional prestige of the building, the staircase presented an original late-Gothic structure to which were added in the 16th century Renaissance details, such as the roof loggia visible in the painting. In the restoration of the building conducted by the architect Camillo Boito (1836-1914) at the end of the 19th century the architectural superstructures added over the centuries, including the loggia covering of the staircase, were removed to recover an ideal original project.
