The most important early kingdom in Thailand was the kingdom of Dvaravati, which dates from approximately the 7th to the 11th century, and was centered in the river valleys of Central Thailand. Though this period is associated with indigenous Mon culture, they adopted many ideas from India, including the Buddhist religion and Indian manners of artistic expression. This standing Buddha is an execellent example. The closefitting robe without folds, the broad shoulders, and the slight f lex of the body are post-Gupta period influences from Sarnath, India. The facial characteristics of the figure, however, appear to be localized.
