Self-trained as a sculptor, John Hoskin was attracted by the utilitarian nature of metal. Although he eventually became Professor of Fine Art at Leicester Polytechnic, he often referred to himself as a welder. Like many artists of the period, he represented the human figure through twisted spiky forms. 'Standing Figure' is typical of the work he made during the 1950s, with its straight thin legs and abstracted body.
