The shaft of this chalice shaped brass standing lamp is decorated with repoussé work leaves, the cup-shaped holder on top features repoussé work flowers and other botanical forms. From the mid-1880s the Century Guild began to design and produce electric lamps as well as those made for use with gas lights or candles. Electricity was still very new at this point and as an early adopter of the technology, Mackmurdo was able to strengthen the progressive credentials of the group.
