Ishimoto Shô is from Misumi-chô in the city of Hamada, Shimane Prefecture. He possessed a superior ability to produce detailed sketches, and while he also drew scenery and birds, female images with abundant sensual beauty—represented by apprentice geisha and female nudes—were his main specialty. In this composition, the contrast between the blue of the clothing and the gold in the background is particularly beautiful. Through such elements as the coloring, which evokes a sense of transparency, and the subtle expression of light and darkness in the skin, Ishimoto has thoroughly incorporated the strong points of the fresco paintings which he adores.
