Obverse: Nude boy rider, crowning himself with his right hand, on a horse which stands right with left foreleg raised; beneath the horse, an Ionic capital. Inscribed behind the rider, ΙΩ [IO]; below, ΙΑΛΟ [IALO.] Reverse: Taras astride dolphin to left, holding a distaff in his left hand, akrostolion [ornamental prowhead from a ship] in his right. Inscribed below: TΑΡΑΣ [TARAS] and ΑΝ [AN]. Taras is both the name of the city that minted this coin and of a legendary figure who was saved from drowning by a dolphin sent by his father, the god Poseidon.
