Although Lowry more frequently painted people among factories and crowded terraced streets in industrial areas, he made at least two paintings of this view of the station. The building is Manchester’s Exchange Station, built in the city centre in 1884 but closed in 1969 and since demolished. In the background on the right, though, you can just about make out the tower of Strangeways Prison, which still stands today.
