Taranto, Italy

Marble statue of a Genius bearing fruit with a chubby, smiling face, wearing a crown of interwoven leaves and bunches of grapes. The chlamys, knotted on the right shoulder, is wrapped around the left arm and is used to hold pomegranates, bunches of grapes, ears of wheat and figs, alluding to the productive and regenerative power of nature. The artefact was probably one of the sculptural elements used in the decoration of the Pentascinar baths.
