The statue of Joseph Pease was unveiled on 28 September 1875. it was sculpted by George Anderson Lawson and cast by the Cox and Sons foundry. Pease is depicted wearing a Quaker lapel-less coat, standing in a pose that he often took when speaking in public.
Pease was born in Darlington and was the first treasurer of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. He was also a colliery owner and politician, who, along with other members of his family, campaigned for the abolition of slavery.
