The statue portraits the great artist in the same thoughtful pose with which, Michelangelo himself, had decided to portray Lorenzo de’ Medici, in the New Sacristy’s tomb. Michelangelo is characterized by the philosopher’s attributes: he dresses a toga and holds a scroll in his hand. According with Baldinucci, Michelangelo the Younger wanted that the sculpture Antonio Novelli was flanked, in the execution of the work, by the painter Fabrizio Boschi, in order to advise him. The preparatory drawing of the work is preserved in the Prints and Drawings Department of the Uffizy Gallery.
